If you ever wondering how strong the A5x Chip when comparing to NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC, Laptop Magazine has done a great job showing you the result.
A5x chip is the processor found on Apple’s new iPad with super resolution, while NVIDIA Tegra 3 is the one you can test it out on ASUS Transformer Prime tablet right now. Both are known as the quad core mobile CPU and offering enormous power for mobile devices. But who’s the winner?
According to Laptop Mag, Tegra 3 is definitely the winner in graphical performance. Tegra 3’s graphic quality is much more detail than Apple’s A5x chip, but A5x display is capable of showing a better color depth where Tegra 3 is not available. However, it’s not purely the fault of the processor as the new iPad is coming with a HD screen (retina display) that kicked ASUS Transformer Prime away. It’s not fair to compare a non-HD display with HD display
Anyway, after doing a complete benchmark using GLBenchmark 2.1, LaptopMag has finally sum up with the following statement:
“the quad-core Tegra 3 blew its competitor way as it achieved an overall score of 1,571 to the A5X’s 692. On the integer (1391 to 614), floating point (2408 to 825) and memory subtests (1076 to 784), the Tegra 3 dominated, but the A5X bested it by a small margin of 324 to 266 on the stream subtest.”
They test the chip with both ShadowGun and Riptide game which is not optimized for A5x yet. Which mean you can’t expect to get the best result from those game. Developers might be able to add the same effects that you can get with Tegra 3 into a A5x optimized game in the future. However, for the current test, the result is showing that Tegra 3 is made for gaming as it offer more details and luxurious visual effects, while Apple A5X is made for performance and best for completing your daily tasks using various kind of apps.
