Most 1TB portable hard drives sold in the stores are still coming with a fat dimension. Even though they are better than the fat external 3.5-inch HDD such as the Seagate Expansion 1TB, the portable version of 1TB HDD is still fat (e.g. Seagate Backup Plus). It would be cool if you can get them in a slim dimension like the SSD or at least coming in the default 2.5-inch thickness. Sadly, you won’t find it on any branded models sold in the store.
Luckily, if you not the type that looking for brand when shopping things, you can get the slim type 1TB external portable USB 3.0 hard drive from Oyen Digital.
Oyen Digital recently has manufactured the new smallest and thinnest 2.5-inch USB 3.0 portable hard drive called “Oyen Digital U32 Shadow” with thickness of 0.48 inch or equal to 1.22cm only!
What’s cool is that this Shadow Portable HDD has used USB 3.0 standard that could perform faster than the old USB 2.0 interface. According to the claim, this Shadow HDD can perform at 5 times faster speed than USB 2.0, which is around 140MB/s at max for reading and writing data. Also, since it’s using 2.5-inch HDD, it can be powered by single USB port and eliminate the need of using Y cable.
Here are the complete list of features and specification found on the official site:
- Compatible with USB 2.0 and SuperSpeed USB 3.0
- Ultra-compact design for easy portability
- Solid Aluminum housing provides excellent protection and heat dissipation
- Dimensions: 4.9 x 2.9 x .48 inches

As an added service and bonus, Oyen Digital also bundle the HDD with a backup software where you’ll get 7GB of lifetime Online Backup account with SpiderOak! If 7GB is not enough for your need, you can also get 10% discount on the SpiderOak Plus (+) backup plan when you purchase the HDD. Sounds like a nice deal, eh?
If you are interested to get the HDD, you can check it out at Amazon for lower price.
I forgot to mention that you’ll also get one nice carrying pouch to store and protect the metal case. Although it’s not a top notch case, it’s better than nothing (most branded portable HDD doesn’t come with bonus case).
