Microsoft Surface: The New Windows-Powered Family Tablet PCs With Interesting Touch Cover

Microsoft, the oldest player in PC market has announced their own Tablet PC called Surface that will come with their latest Windows OS. We have seen a lot of Android tablets in the past, so you might think that Microsoft Surface is going to be yet another tablet stuffed into the crowd. However, Microsoft has stated that Surface is different.

Microsoft Surface Tablet

Surface tablet been designed and engineered by their Employees and built with their 30-year of experience (in manufacturing hardware). Microsoft Surface is a “seamless transition between consumption and creation, without compromise.” stated by Microsoft.

Specification wise, Microsoft haven’t announced the full specs. However, they’ve told us that Surface will come with a full-size USB port, 16:9 aspect ratio, 10.6-inch HD display, Gorilla Glass, VaporMg case and interesting angled edge for natural resting on the desk.

VaporMg is a new tech term by Microsoft to call their new casing technology. VaporMg is, according to Microsoft, a casing made equal to the luxury watch by using magnesium mold and depositing particles. This is the technology that allow Microsoft to craft their Surface tablets thinner than its competitor because the parts can be molded as thin as 0.65 millimeter only. It’s about as thin as your credit card, but it’s much stronger and lighter.

Surface is also coming with an integrated kickstand to eliminate the need of buying external tablet stand. It’s thanks to the VaporMg case to allow Microsoft to stuff in a thin layer of kickstand without adding too much of its weight and dimension.

One most interesting accessory for Microsoft surface is the Touch Cover keyboard. According to Microsoft, this touch cover is a step forward in human-computer interface. Though I wouldn’t went as far as alien tech, but their touch cover is really cool. It could be the strongest buying point when Surface has been released later in the future!

Microsoft Surface Tablet - Touch Cover Color Series

The touch cover is a 3mm thin cover similar to Apple’s smart cover (minus the folding-ability). However, it’s way “smarter” because you can use it for typing! I think it’s more like a touch keyboard rather than a cover. This accessory features a revolutionary pressure-sensitive technology that will detect keystrokes as gestures. You can use this keyboard interface to type much faster than using the virtual on-screen keyboard.

What’s cool is that the Touch Cover will be available in various vibrant colors that you can choose from. As you can see from the image above, there are 5 colors in the collection: Red, Pink, Blue, Black and White. Also check out the following video demo for more details about the kickstand and touch cover:

Nice groundbreaking music pairing! :)

Amazement aside, Microsoft has stated that Surface tablet will be available in two models:

  • Surface with Windows RT and NVIDIA Tegra 3+ SoC (source), and
  • Surface with Windows 8 and Intel 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge Core i5 (source)

The latest Windows OS for tablet is sure an interesting system. You can see all the wonderful praises done by Wired for this OS. However, you should still consider well before jumping on this bandwagon. It’s still a new OS and I’m sure there are bunch of bugs waiting to be squashed.

For the availability, Microsoft Surface (Windows RT model) will be available around August for $499, while the Windows 8 Pro model will be available 3 months later for $699.
