If you are in the market for a mid-class coffee maker review, then you have come to the right page. There are bunch of solution offered by multiple brands out there, but I’m not going to make your head explode with those. Instead, we are going to focus on Delonghi EC702 15-bar pump coffee espresso maker in this review which has been strongly recommended by a lot of people across the States.
In this Delonghi EC702 review, I’m going to point out the core information that you have to know before getting one, and why it will worth your attention when there are bunch espresso machine of other brands offered in the market.
A little bit of background, Delonghi is popular Italian brand that has been existed for more than 109 years in the market. Even their starting point is not as a company that focus on espresso machine, later they’ve indulged themselves more into this area and have won several awards like from Red Dot design and 50 most influential designers in the world in 2006.
You can expect to get a higher than normal type of design on most of their coffee maker or espresso machine as they’ve really put a lot of effort in there. Although most Delonghi products are now produces and made in China (since their acquisition of Kenwood), the design and engineering remains original from Italy.
The same thing goes for this Delonghi EC702 15-bar pump espresso machine. As far as the production goes, Delonghi EC702 is made in China with the quality control strictly monitored by those in Italy.
History aside, let’s get back to what this Delonghi EC702 has to offer. Generally speaking, Delonghi EC702 espresso maker is an excellent espresso, cappucino and latte makers with cafe-quality. I mean, getting this EC702 to rest in your kitchen is just like having your private cafe where only you, the VVIP or your family member can get access to. You can make the best coffee mix or espresso and sip it every morning without going out to the local cafe, and even save more money on the process.
Of course, unlike the heavy-class commercial espresso machine or espresso maker with built in grinder that cost more than a thousand dollars and hard to use, Delonghi EC702 is practically a newbie-friendly machine (without grinder) for the first-timer. you just need to be a little keener to make your own espresso.
To understand the this espresso maker deeper, I invite you to look through our comprehensive research below. Let’s start with…
The Benefits and Features
Here is the list of features and benefits that you can enjoy on Delonghi EC702 espresso machine:
- Patented dual function filter holder
Delonghi EC702 espresso maker has a nice dual function filter holder, which is a two size filter with ESE filter technology for coffee pods. You can choose to grind your coffee bean yourself or use coffee pods. the filter will improve the brewing process and produce nice crèma.If you are using ground coffee, it’s advisable to get a quality coffee bean grinder that could produces very fine ground coffee before you put it onto the filter to make your espresso. There is a certain downside if you don’t use a fine ground coffee on this espresso machine. More on this later in the pros and cons section.
- 15-bar pump pressure
You may ask: “What is a 15-Bar Pump Driven Espresso Machine all about? what is 15-bar?”
Kicking all the weird jargon aside, 15-bar pump means that the espresso machine has a great “pressure” (“bar” = “pressure” – atmosphere pressure or ambient sea level pressure) to pump out the hot water through the filter. 15-bar means 15 times of pressures will be forcefully pressed upon the filter to squeeze out the crèma and coffee drips.
Personally, I don’t have the idea on how to create the super thick crèma that most people would love to have. But I’ve read that only an espresso machine with 15-bar or more is capable of producing thick crèma.
- Two separate thermostats with stainless steel boiler
Aside from the stainless steel boiler for maximum durability, this espresso machine also have two separate (invisible) chambers inside the machine with dedicated thermostats to ensure the water/steam temperatures are great as always. One for the water temperature, the other for the steam for making perfect milk froth.
Without proper temperature, no great coffee could be made, and no proper milk froth could be formed!
- Patented Cappucino System frother
I’ll want to call this the ‘magic wand’ because this is where the magic happen when you are trying to make a cappuccino, espresso or lattes. It doesn’t sprout out flowers though, but it’s where the milk foam is made.
Located at the right side of the machine, DeLonghi EC702 patented cappucino system frother has a kind of special chamber in the wand that mixes both steam and milk continuously to generate rich creamy froth. Just bring a pitch of fresh milk, stick the pitch up to the steaming wand, turn the big knob above it and it will start steaming the milk.
- removable 1.3-liter (44-ounce) water tank with water indicator
Delonghi EC702 espresso maker has a super convenient water tank at the rear side that side into the machine from the side. It’s kind of drawer where you can easily remove it for cleaning or refilling. It has water indicator to let you know how much water is left (easily viewable at the side) and the size is about half smaller than ordinary commercial espresso machine.
Each full tank of water could serves several cups of beverages before you need to fill it again.
- Self-priming operation
The most complain ever heard on making cappucino or espresso is the amount of time to make one. Delonghi has a self-priming operation which make sure you are going to quickly making your second cup of latte or espresso with no more wait for the heat up.
Of course, if it’s first started early in the morning, you still need to switch it on and let it pre-heating itself for about 15-minutes before you can start making the first cup.
- Large removable drip tray and dedicated cup storage tray
To the top, Delonghi EC702 is coming with a dedicated cup storage tray to store cups. At the same time the machine will warm up the cups, killing germs and bacteria altogther.
To the bottom, the large stainless steel area is the removable drip tray to hold the drips or spills.

Positive Customer Reviews
There is no perfect coffee maker or espresso machine ever made for us because each person has different tastes, skills or experience in brewing their own beverage. There are good responses, as well as bad one. In this section, we are going to give a a brief review summary of those who’ve had their best experiences with this Delonghi EC702 espresso machine. However, if you have time to read their full reviews, I would invite you to check them out at Amazon instead (I suggest you to do so as all, too).
Here it comes:
- A reviewer from Brooklyn, NY USA has rated this product 5 stars and stated that: “the machine is actually great and any negative reviews that you have come read so far about this coffee machine is that the user failed to follow the instruction well enough.“
- 2. Oakland user also stated that: “This product has surprised me. It heats up quickly, even the manual book is stating that you should heat the machine up for 15 minutes before you brew the first cup, I find you can get a perfect cup after only about 3 minutes of warm-up.“
- A user From LA even goes further describing that it takes some serious practice to produce a ‘perfect espresso’. “There are so many human variables that come into play – how long to let the pump run, proper warm-up time, type of coffee, the grind, how much you compact/tamp the coffee, etc. – that no two people will get the same results. However, the performance of this machine has been flawless.“
I like the idea of creating a perfect espresso. It’s all drill down to our personal skills, experience and type of coffee that you are using. so if you can’t create a nice and tasty espresso with thick crema and froth, or the taste is just unnatural, you can’t blame on the machine at all. Instead, start getting your hands dirty and practice, practice, practice. Eventually, you’ll end up with a great cup latte or espresso with your own golden ratio.
Anyway, if you are interested to know more about what’s others are talking about about this Delonghi EC702, go ahead to Amazon for the details.
Real Life Customer Complaints
The hottest problem that keeps occuring is the nozzle leaks if the lit is not closed completely. Also, there is some sort of failure on the anti-drip design. The nozzle will keep dripping after the espresso is made. But most of them are triggered by users that is not properly cleaning the filter from ground coffee. To be safe and free from the cleaning hassles, it’s advisable to use a pre-ground coffee pods for easier process.
Overall, similar with what the reviewer from Brooklyn said, most problem occurs because user haven’t properly follow the instruction well enough.
So after getting one, make sure to read the manual book properly, or you can go ahead download the e-manual here.
Just make sure to run water through the machine a couple of times, and make a few of throw away coffee (use inexpensive coffee for this purpose) to eliminate the weird machine taste on the first use. It seems all espresso machine has this syndrome and you’ll have to clean it properly before you can start testing your first tasty espresso.

Is Delonghi EC702 Espresso Machine made for you?
This is the critical question to help you decide. As far as the espresso machine goes, DeLonghi EC702 is a practical espresso machine designed for those who are looking for fast espresso serving, especially for the second cup and so forth. Also, it’s very newbie friendly with clearly illustrated manual book to follow through. I find it’s hard to fail if you are a good learner, and you can even watch the video above to see the quick usage tutorial done by the guys from WholeLatteLove.
Delonghi EC 702 has been heavy discounted over at Amazon in the last few weeks. The Manufacture Manufacturer’s suggested retail price was $350, but now you can have about $200 or lower. You really shouldn’t pay more than $200 on this item because you would still need to invest on a fine coffee grinder, unless you’ve decided to go for a pre-ground coffee pods.
Also, you might need to invest a little bit (lower than $10 bucks) on an external tamper like a RSVP Terry’s Tamper. The reason is because the built-in tamper is rather hard to use, and external tamper will do job much easier.
We will point out a few great coffee bean grinder to pair up with this espresso machine later in this month. The overall cost should be more than the MSRP of $350. With a little investment, you are going to brew your own espresso like pro (of course, you still have to train yourself and make your own ‘golden ratio’ before you can be counted as a pro!).
