Recently, Pioneer has released yet another noew external blu-ray writer and it’s another smallest and lightest drive in the market. Pioneer is certainly the old player in this field, so it’s no wonder they’ve got the skill to trim down the size and weight by perfecting from their previous product. This BDR-XD04 is weighing just under 8.5oz with the overall thickness at 0.55-inch only that nominated this guy as the world’s smallest (thinnest) and lightest external blu-ray burner.

Sadly, because Pioneer is trying hard to decrease its dimension and weight, you will find no support of the latest USB 3.0 interface and the write speed is only 6x at max. No idea if USB 3.0 interface will really add some weight to the blu-ray writer or not, it’s a big downside for Pioneer because everyone is moving forward to this faster standard now.

But one nice feature that you can enjoy from this slimmest blu-ray writer is the capability to draw power from single USB 2.0 port without the need of extra power from another port (using Y-cable) to support the drive. If the BUS power of your USB port is not enough, Pioneer has allocated one port for you that you can hook it up with AC adapter to obtain power directly from power outlet.

As far as compatibility, Pioneer BDR-XD04 blu-ray burner support most of media type, including the latest quad layer 128GB BD-Rs to the good old CD media format. Price-wise, Pioneer BDR-XD04 blu-ray writer is going to cost $150 and will be released to the store in the mid-January 2012.

Well, personally, I’m not yet a fans of both USB 3.0 and blu-ray drive because of the price factor that is pretty ‘expensive’ for now. However, if you’ve already become the fans of this superspeeding USB 3.0 devices, I guess this Buffalo Portable External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Drive will be yours interest.

It’s the newest blu-ray drive from the Japanese company Buffalo. It’s has stand firmly on the new standard of superspeed USB 3.0, that promises about 5Gbps transfer rate (in hard drive mode). Although it’s not described how fast it could be on this new Buffalo Blu-ray drive, but I guess at the level of 12x speed, you won’t get any ‘lag’ if it’s ever happened in USB 2.0 interface.

Also, if there is no USB 3.0 ports made ready for your system, this Buffalo Portable External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Drive provides a backward compatibility with USB 2.0, and the capability to burn CD and DVD as well.

This blu-ray drive is also future-proof because it has support 3D blu-ray film playback. This Buffalo Portable External USB 3.0 Blu-ray Drive is ready to ship and it’s currently available for $307.99 at Amazon.

But thanks to Amex Digital, they brought this technology to us in a form of slim and cool portable blu-ray burner, with affordable price!

You have no need to buy a PS3 to enough blu-ray disc anymore. According to the source, Amex Digital’s Portable Blu-ray drive is made for Mac users. But I don’t care about that at all. As long as it’s USB driven, obviously, PC user will also capable to enjoy this on their newly bought laptop and Desktop PC.

You can expect this burner to be able to digest all Disc type well. Starting from CD, VCD, DVD and BD. The smaller 8cm disc also acceptable. There is no disc tray for this portable drive. Just insert the disc like what you’ll do with your car disc player.

The price is expected to be at $270 while the availability still unknown yet.
