Western Digital, one of the biggest rival of Seagate has just acquired Hitachi Global Storage Technologies which considered as one of their competing rival. It’s all about big fish feasting small fishes. It’s feeding frenzy and Western Digital has grown so much in the past few years to the state they can have head-to-head battle with Seagate (which has also acquired Maxtor technologies in the past).

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies was acquired for a deal price of USD $4.3 billion. With Hitachi’s technology, WDC might be able to produce even better storage solution in the future. It’s interesting to see what they are coming up when they’ve fully fused their technology. According to the source, two Hitachi’s executives will be added to Western Digital’s board of directors’ seats, while the $4.3 billion is expected to close at Q3 of 2011 and comprising $3.5 billion in cash together with 25 million WD common share that worth $750 million.

As a consumer, I don’t care how the big boys battling each other. All that I want to care and enjoy is the increase in their quality, and of course, decrease in pricing for their entire new product line if possible.

Charging Your iPhone with USB wire or A/C Adapter is kind of old method of rejuicing the power, at least that’s what Hitachi Maxell is thinking of right now. The reason is because the company has just announced two new charging pads that are pretty similar to the previous WildCharge that we have reported in the yesteryear. It will charge your gadget (iPhone 4) wirelessly using induction technology.

All you have to do is to sleeve the iPhone into a special charging sleeve that will come along with the wireless charger, and place it on the charging pad to re-juice the battery.

Those two charging pads are known as WP-PD10.BK and WP-PS10S.BK. Hitachi Maxell WP-PD10.BK is capable of rejuicing two iPhone 4 at once because it has two 5V power transmissions, while the WP-S10S.BK only has one 5V power transmission.

Pricing for both devices have not been announced yet, but the market is expected to receive these devices on April 25th.

3TB external desktop hard drive has started to flood the market since the start of 2011 as the demand for more space has been rising rapidly. Since Hitachi is one of the old player in the storage market, they’ve also launched their own version of 3TB HDD into their series of external HDD called XL Desk.

This XL Desk series has three capacity model, including 1TB, 2TB and largest at 3TB. However, it’s pretty sad that Hitachi is not using USB 3.0 interface for the maximum performance. Hitachi XL Desk and Hitachi X Mobile are still using USB 2.0 interface that has growing old.

In the post of Hitachi SimpleNet Device, we’ve mention about their SimpleTough external USB hard drive. Well, here it is, the SimpleTouch hard drive. It’s portable, rugged case, and it has a cool 3m drop-test which mean any kind of drop from within 3 meters will not going to damage the hard drive.

Hitachi SimpleTech SimpleTough USB Hard drive Features:

Plug n‘ play simple for instant USB drive access

Automatic backups with Hitachi Local Backup™

Complete, unbeatable protection with Hitachi Ultimate Backup™ online service (2 GB free)

Joggle™ digital content manager for easy tracking, sharing and publishing of photos, music, and videos

Rugged pocket-sized design

Drop and spill resistant

Velvety smooth texture for a secure grip

Durable and made for travel

Integrated USB cable

Free technical support

3-year warranty

One purchase is actually worth the size of the capacity you choose + 2GB of free online storage provided by Hitachi (Hitachi Ultimate Backup). Although it’s only 2GB, you can use it to store very sensitive data that won’t go damage because of the hard drive failure.

And the most interesting feature Hitachi SimpleTOUGH has is the rugged body case which capable of withstanding a 1-TON truck rolling through it. I know such extreme condition is not going to happen (unless you are super-unlucky), but this proved that the TOUGH simply means TOUCH, not just there for cool effect for the brand name.

Hitachi SimpleTOUGH USB hard drives are currently available in three different sizes, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB and they are priced at USD$99.99, $109.99 and $139.99, respectively.

UPDATE:

I’ve missed something important. Hitachi Simpletough is also having three color choices on each of the capacity. here is the detail:

250GB Red Wine for $99.99

320GB Blue Dusk for $119.99 and

500GB Texture Black for $119.99

The latest invention by Hitachi will set you free from relying the actually NAS system as your network storage. Hitachi SimpleNet is the device that will help you turning all of your USB Drives, such as flash drives or external Hard drive into your home network storage in a snap. Just plug in your Network cable to the ethernet port, and jack in your USB drive into the provided (two of them) USB ports.

At a mere $79, SimpleNet will connect your network and turning almost any external USB storage device into your NAS, with hot-swappable functionality. SimpleNet is actually design to work together with their SimpleTouch or SimpleDrive from Hitachi, but working with drives from other brand is also allowable. The only problem that will (probably) occur is the driver compatibility between your storage devices and SimpleNet USB-to-Ethernet gadget.
