The laptop for children, or known as OLPC (One Laptop per Child) is getting better and better. Not in the performance section, but on the overall features and durability for kids. The latest OLPC is the XO-3, which been unveiled in a condition that is quite unique. It’s a tablet like device with green themed enclosure. There is a flexible silicone cover that you can peel up to get access to the interface that is using the latest Pixel Qi panel.

As you may have known, the Pixel Qi panel is one of the most energy efficient e-ink display that could show up colors and readable under the bright sunlight. It’s very suitable for kids who want to read their story book outdoor, and it could be saving battery life as well.

Specification wise, OLPC XO-3 is not a performance freak. Hence, it doesn’t come with impressive component that would bloated the price mark. The OLPC XO-3 is coming with Marvell ARMADA PXA618 CPU, 512MB RAM, 8-inch 1024 x 768p Pixel Qi display, and to the sideways you can see the full sized USB port, audio, memory slot, speaker port and charging port. The ports are cleverly protected by the peel-away silicone covers, so kids could really free themselves from a broken OLPC when hit by heavy rain while playing outdoor reading their story e-books.

But that is not the most exciting feature OLPC XO-3 has. The most intriguing feature is the “trio recharging options” where you can actually recharge the laptop via:

AC adapter

big solar panel on its peel-away cover, and

hand crank mechanism to manually recharge the battery

No idea how long the internal battery could last per full recharge, but according to Slashgear, a short sixty-seconds manual hand cranking is good for 10-minutes of usage. workout for 6 minutes would gives about 1 hour of battery life, where it sounds like a good trade of power and time.

Anyway, this OLPC XO-3 is expected to hit the market for a good $100 price mark for the LCD module, while the Pixel Qi model is still unknown.

Why give a laptop to a child in the emerging world? If you replace the word “laptop” with “education” the answer becomes clear. You don’t wait to educate until all other challenges are resolved. You educate at the same time because it’s such an important part of all the other solutions.

It’s nice if you have some spare month. You need to remember that the price you pay is not only about to purchase an OLPC, but you’ve done a good deed to help one child to find their own future.

But if you don’t want any OLPC and just want to help those poor children, you can simply giving away 1 OLPC at value of $199 as many as you like.
